Audiences answered the question "Who ya gonna call?" loud and clearly this weekend by attending screenings of the new Ghostbusters movie.
The film did a respectable amount of business in the U.S. and managed to bring in a decent amount of good reviews, too. That led to many speculating that Sony would soon announce a sequel to the rebooted franchise.
Sony head Rory Bruer recently stated that a sequel will happen.
"The Ghostbusters world is alive and well," Bruer said to the Wrap. "I expect Ghostbusters to become an important brand and franchise. While nothing has been officially announced yet, there's no doubt in my mind it will happen."
Most Ghostbusters fans would agree that the second sequel to the original franchise just wasn't that great, so what would make for a good sequel with the new team of paranormal scientists? Here's what we would like to see Sony tackle in the next Ghostbusters film.
Zuul
In the original Ghostbusters, Zuul possessed Sigourney Weaver's character and was the big bad for that first movie. Zuul is a demigod who controls the gateway to another dimension. Zuul was also teased in a post-credits scene of the new Ghostbusters movie, so it's likely this will figure into the next movie.
Less Cameos And References To The Original Films
With that being said, though, one of the things most critics agreed on was that the references in the new Ghostbusters to the original movies just didn't work: the cameos felt forced and the movie didn't really need them because it stands pretty well on its own. The sequel should rely less on referencing the past and focusing more on the future.
Backstory For Holtzmann And Jones
We learned a lot about the history of Abby and Erin, but virtually nothing about Holtzmann (who stole every scene she appeared in) and Jones. All we know is that Jillian Holtzmann is an eccentric particle physicist: but where did she come from? What inspired her to become a scientist? The same goes for Leslie Jones: she works for the New York public transportation department, but who is she and what motivated her to learn so much about the city's history?
More Chris Hemsworth
Chris Hemsworth's hilarious take on the sexy and ditzy secretary turned gender roles on its head in the new movie. The Thor actor proved he has comedic chops, so let's see him become more of a part of the team.
