He's big, he's bad and he has godlike powers. He's Thanos, one of Marvel's most evil supervillains.
Now, the company plans on giving him his own comic book series, beginning with Thanos #1, which will release soon.
According to Marvel, the Mad Titan arrives this fall, setting off on a solo adventure to take over the world, which he believes is his in the first place. The series comes from writer Jeff Lemire (Extraordinary X-Men, Moon Knight) and Mike Deodato (Avengers, Invincible Iron Man).
Thanos was born on the Saturn moon Titan and has something called the Deviants gene, which gives him powers. He uses these powers for evil, not only destroying his family, but also much of the galaxy, too. His main goal throughout his comic book history was to collect the Infinity Gems to create the Infinity Gauntlet, which will make him impossible to kill. He's probably the most powerful villain in Marvel's history, which makes a comic book series about him an interesting read.
"As to what makes Thanos so compelling, the easy answer is that he is so powerful and so evil," Lemire said to ComicBook.com. "This combination opens things up for a lot of story potential. But the truth is that it's Thanos' past that makes him so interesting. What motivates a godlike being like this? What makes him tick and what does he have left to fight for?"
Thanks to his appearance in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Thanos is also part of the Marvel cinematic universe and has a role as the big baddie in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War, which will likely revolve around the comic book story of Thanos collecting the Infinity Gems.
In his new comic book series, though, Thanos' story has evolved and will also include some other familiar characters.
"I'm not spoiling that because Thanos' mission comes as a big reveal in issue 1," Lemire said. "I will say that the cosmic cube is not involved. And there will be a very solid supporting cast in this series. A regular set of underused characters that will become very important to the series and to Thanos himself. Starfox, Nebula and Thane will play key roles."
Thanos will seek to rise back to power, which means that he'll begin terrorizing the galaxy again. Will anyone stop him? Can they?
Thanos #1 hits comic book store shelves and online this fall.
