In case you forgot, an Angry Birds film was announced a while back. Given the massive success of Rovio Entertainment's mobile game sensation, it isn't surprising that an Angry Birds movie will be flying into theaters. What is a little surprising, though, is the huge amount of talent behind the project.
Sony Pictures and Rovio unveiled the first still from the film, alongside the official cast announcement after players in the Angry Birds game flung more than 1 billion birds in the last 48 hours.
The cast is an impressive lineup of comedians and actors, with Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses) as Red, Danny McBride (Pineapple Express) as Bomb and Josh Gad (Frozen) as Chuck, alongside Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids) as Matilda and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) as Mighty Eagle. Bill Hader (SNL), Keegan-Michael Key (Comedy Central's Key and Peele), YouTube stars Smosh and Kat McKinnon (SNL) will also lend their voices in supporting roles.
You can see Chuck, Red and Bomb (in that order) in the first look at the film below.
Then there are the people behind the movie. Wreck-it-Ralph director Clay Katis will helm the film along with The Smurfs director Fergal Reilly, featuring a script written by The Simpsons scribe Jon Vitti.
"I'm extremely proud of this cast," says Angry Birds producer John Cohen. "Not only do we have Jason, Josh, Danny, Bill, Maya and Peter bringing these characters to life, but they're surrounded by an all-star ensemble of emerging comedic talent - these are some of the funniest people out there today, and we're thrilled to have them all on board".
Blanca Juti, chief marketing officer of Rovio Entertainment, also shared his excitement for the project with Rovio's signature brand of humor.
"We heard limbs and dialogue were all the rage in modern animation so we went all in. Not just one, but all of our characters have legs and wings! Except for the pigs, that is," he says in a press release.
As ridiculous as a film based on a game about birds being catapulted into evil pigs sounds, the amount of creativity and talent going into the project at least makes it seem like Angry Birds could hold promise. And it's not anywhere near as strange as a film adaptation of Tetris. Yes, that Tetris.
Angry Birds will launch itself into theaters on July 1, 2016.
