What we listen to on Pandora often depends on our mood. While how we feel at the moment often does influence our musical choices, it's not the only thing that determines them, of course.
Sure, music is the universal language, but where we live may also determine what we like to listen to. But you probably knew this already. Obviously, regional and cultural differences impact our musical tastes greatly. If you live in Nashville, you're probably more likely to listen to honky tonk than someone in, say, Seoul, who likes K-Pop, because of social influences.
Musical tastes differ from country to country, state to state and city to city. And believe it or not, even within a single city, residents may not be jamming out to the same tunes as their neighbors.
Pandora recently recently released the top radio stations by New York City neighborhood in August 2014 based on the zip codes of the users. The musical preferences of New Yorkers are just as diverse as the residents themselves.
Pandora features some of the neighborhoods in a nifty infographic, which you can check out below.
The type of music each neighborhood listens to can be very descriptive of the demographics of the population of the area. For instance, residents of the Upper West Side in Manhattan, where many families live, enjoy the Toddler station. The oddly specific Hipster BBQ and Hipster Cocktail Party stations are favorites among residents of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, which is becoming a hotspot for many a hipster to call home. Latin music reigns supreme in many neighborhoods in the Bronx, which has a large Hispanic population.
I'd be interested to see what the top Pandora stations are in other cities of the world, such as Los Angeles, London and Tokyo. However, New York was of course a great first choice for the diversity of its population.
