As has long been rumored, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice will officially be returning to theaters with its new extended Ultimate Edition cut. The new version of the film includes 30 minutes of additional footage, new characters and even a shiny new R-rating.
The catch is that the extended version (and by many accounts superior version) will only be available in theaters for one night only, and only in select cities at that. Warner Bros. lists one theater in 11 U.S. cities as getting the film on July 27, with New York City being the only city that will show the film at two different theaters. Below is a list of cities hosting the film:
• Austin, Texas
• Burbank, California
• Chicago, Illinois
• Houston, Texas
• Columbus, Ohio
• Hollywood, California
• New York City, New York
• Phoenix, Arizona
• San Francisco, California
• Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
• Washington
It appears that all of the showings are currently sold out, which isn't all that surprising given the legion of DC comic fans and the fact that there is only one showing per theater. Perhaps Warner Bros. will provide additional showings out of popular demand, but so far there has been no word on whether or not fans should expect another chance to see the extended cut on the big screen. You can join a waiting list for any particular showing via the Warner Bros. website here.
It's a bit of a bummer for fans who don't live anywhere near those 11 cities or who weren't able to get a ticket, but at least they don't have to wait long for the Ultimate Edition of the film to arrive digitally and on Blu-ray/DVD.
The movie arrives in digital formats on June 28, with the film releasing physically on July 19. It includes a number of additional scenes that should add further context to the events of the film. Warner Bros. released a tease of the ultimate edition depicting Lex Luthor using a Mother Box to communicate with some alien presence, an alien that is now all but confirmed to be Justice League villain Steppenwolf. You can read more about the upcoming Justice League film here.
The ultimate edition of the film also reveals the role of Jena Malone's mysterious character, who was cut from the theatrical version of the movie. Many fans suspected she might be playing Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl, but that isn't exactly the case. What other surprises the extended version of the movie holds in store for fans is still a mystery, but one that will be revealed soon.
