OnePlus finally made its highly anticipated OnePlus 3 official and it looks great on paper, but how about actual performance?
With a hefty 6 GB on board, at a time where 4 GB is still the standard for high-end flagships, the OnePlus 3 seems poised to take on the competition with bells and whistles when it comes to multitasking.
A speed test, however, tells a different story when pitting the new OnePlus 3 against the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge flagship.
The speed test itself is quite simple and straightforward. Both the OnePlus 3 and the Galaxy S7 edge have to open several applications in two rounds, while on a timer. The first round aims to determine how fast each device loads apps the first time, whereas the second round is to show how well each device holds said apps in memory.
The Samsung Galaxy S7 edge blazed through the first round in one minute and one second, while the OnePlus 3 was 10 seconds slower at one minute and 11 seconds. The second round, meanwhile, shows a more notable difference. The Galaxy S7 edge took only 33 seconds to load the apps from memory, but the OnePlus 3 had to reload each and every app, taking one minute and 10 seconds in total. The new OnePlus flagship couldn't even keep a web page in Chrome.
Shutting off the animation on both phones didn't help the OnePlus 3 win either, as the Galaxy S7 edge still proved to be 42 seconds faster.
Such a performance with 6 GB of RAM on board is surprising disappointing to say the least, and indicates that the OnePlus 3 is not properly managing the memory it has. On the bright side, memory management could be fixed with a software update and OnePlus would be wise to do it as soon as possible.
The OnePlus 3 has impressive specs and features all around, but what's the use of getting a smartphone with 6 GB of RAM if it can't use all that memory at full potential?
