Sony kicked off its E3 2016 press conference today by unveiling that a new God of War title is coming to the PlayStation 4.
The company presented a consistent demo of the upcoming action-adventure title that shows a surprising version of Kratos: not only is the Spartan bearded, but he has set out to hunt in the forest in the company of...his son. Not long passes before the two characters start to face enemies and Kratos promptly gets back to crushing the malicious creatures.
The gameplay trailer seems to put a lot of emphasis on scale, as Kratos starts to explore a large new world by entering the forest. Previous rumors hinted that the novel God of War title will pull inspiration from Norse mythology, and the footage backs them up. It remains to be seen whether or not Kratos' son will be playable as a separate character.
The first part of the trailer shows how well Kratos adapted to his new role and presumably the great challenge of parenthood. When comparing the quiet life the duo lives to the hero's past adventures, an odd tranquility strikes the player. The family life of Kratos is unexpectedly streamlined, as we see him discussing with his son and they go hunting together.
The ripped hero has little difficulty adapting to being a parent, and a tough-love giving one, at that. He chooses to always address his son with "boy," which sounds more like a bellowed command than a fatherly approach.
Kratos is very demanding throughout the trailer, asking his kid to prove the self-sufficient alpha traits that turn a teenager into a man. As you would expect, the boy is hesitant and weary of the big and perilous world around him, but he is eager to prove himself to his father.
The Spartan father does take some leafs out of the books of Yoda, with inspiring one liners such as, "Do not be sorry, be better," thrown in the child's direction. The general vibe of the trailer demonstrates that Kratos has a much easier time keeping his anger demons in check when the kid is around.
The gameplay trailer features a boss fight where Kratos displays his consistent skills of dodging and damage inflicting axe work. Sadly, he also gets pierced by an arrow that his son misfired.
Afterwards, the two get back into the forest in pursuit of a majestic Nordic deer, which the kid shoots with his bow. An emotional moment follows, but we will not spoil it for you.
