Samsung is reportedly working on a top-notch flip phone codenamed "Veyron," with model number SM-W2017.
The company is still holding a torch for clamshell smartphones and seems keen on proving that the form factor is suitable for high-end specifications. Last year, it released the sleek SM-W2016 flip phone with impressive specs and features all around, including a metal build, an in-house Exynos processor and a hefty 3 GB of RAM.
A New SM-W2017 flip phone reportedly packs even more impressive specifications, and as the model number suggests, it will come as the successor to last year's SM-W2017.
According to SamMobile, this new SM-W2017 clamshell smartphone is internally codenamed "Veyron" and will be exclusive to China when it makes its debut. SamMobile says it doesn't really have many details for now but speculates that Samsung's upcoming flip phone could pack a powerful Exynos 8890 processor, two 3.9-inch Super AMOLED displays with HD resolution, a 12-megapixel main camera and a 5-megapixel selfie cam.
In terms of design, the SM-W2017 Veyron will likely boast a glass and metal construction, just like the recent smartphones Samsung pushed to the high end of the smartphone market, including the Galaxy S7 flagship. However, it remains to be seen whether the flip phone will sport the same water and dust resistance as the flagship.
Last year's SM-W2016 also came with wireless charging capabilities, so the feature is expected to grace this year's iteration as well, perhaps with some advanced rapid charging technology in the mix.
If Samsung chooses to retain a yearly launch schedule, the W2017 flip phone could make its debut sometime toward the end of this year. The W2016 launched in November 2015, so we're not really expecting its successor for a few months.
Alas, nothing's impossible, and with everything based on rumors and speculations so far, it's best to take this report with a grain of salt for the time being. Samsung made no mention of a new flip phone in the works and has yet to offer any statement on the matter.
If the W2017 Veyron clamshell smartphone is set for a November debut, more information will surely surface until then. We're looking forward to hearing more about this smartphone, although it may never make it outside of China. We'll keep you up to date with the latest leaks and reports as soon as we get more details, but remember it's all just hearsay until the formal announcement.
