Earlier in May this year, Nintendo confirmed that it would be launching two new games in its popular Pokémon series - Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon - during the holiday season. Now, images of two new Pokémon have leaked online, giving fans a peek into what is in store.
The leak comes from publication Serebii - the go-to source for all news pertaining to Pokémon - which shared the scans of CoroCoro, a Japanese magazine.
"The first images from CoroCoro have leaked and have revealed two new Pokémon," notes the site.
According to the leak, one of the Pokémon is called Nekkola. For those wondering what type of animal Nekkola is, it is a regular koala. This news will please fans of the series as they have eagerly awaited the arrival of a Pokémon based on a koala. Nekkola is not only droopy-eyed and adorable-looking, it also comes with the "Definite Sleep" ability, which makes it able to withstand any condition apart from sleep.
Serebii's founder Joe Merrick reveals Nekkola can "only be put to Sleep. It can't be Burned, Paralyzed or Poisoned."
The second Pokémon is Iwanko, a "Rock-type Pokémon" and a puppy Pokémon that has the Vital Spirit and Keen Eye abilities to its credit. Pokémon has only nine pure rock-types and Iwanko certainly stands out from the crowd!
The typing makes Iwanko resistant to fire, flying, normal and poison. However, being of the Rock type makes it weak against Water, Grass, Fighting and Ground types.
Technically, Iwanko has already been teased in the trailer for Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon. However, the puppy Pokémon was included in the clip for a mere second and was visible from the rear before it vanished from sight in the trailer.
Redditor WatashinoTurn has an interesting take on the names of the two new Pokémon.
"Nekkoala (Japanese name) is pure Normal with Definite Sleep (Japanese name). Its name is probably a combination of nemuru (to fall asleep) or neru (to sleep) and koala. Iwanko (Japanese name) is pure Rock with either Keen Eye or Vital Spirit. Its name is probably a combination of iwa (rock), wan (sound of dog barking), wanko (puppy), and ko (child)," he says.
Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon are anticipated to be released in time for the holiday season. Upon its release, gamers can deploy the Nintendo Pokémon Bank to allocate their team between the new releases and the eShop variant of the original titles.
