Clark Gregg Weighs In On Who S.H.I.E.L.D.’s New Director Should Be

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s third season has come to a close, leaving fans with something to ponder on until the show comes back: who will S.H.I.E.L.D.'s new director be?

A flash forward in the season 3 finale showed that Coulson was not only no longer in charge of S.H.I.E.L.D. but that he was also looking a little worse for wear as he tries to track down Daisy Johnson after the former agent went missing.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Clark Gregg, who plays Agent Phil Coulson in the show, said the development took him by surprise as well, which he learned about the night before Captain America: Civil War was to premiere. He said that he wasn't pissed about it at all because he understands why the show had to go that way.

According to Gregg, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had an episode early in the series that said "heavy is the head that wears the crown." He thinks Coulson had dreamed of being the S.H.I.E.L.D. director but the post was not a lifelong goal for him.

Instead, Gregg thinks Coulson is happiest being a field agent. He's proud of all the choices that his character has made throughout the show's three seasons. And even when Coulson had regrets, the actor feels that deep inside the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent is the desire to simply be an agent again.

The events surrounding Coulson's demotion have not been made clear but his tendency to bend the rules where it concerns his team, particularly Daisy, could be seen as his downfall. It also doesn't help that the agent is on Team Cap, especially in the aftermath of Captain America: Civil War.

So who will be stepping in to fill Coulson's shoes as the new S.H.I.E.L.D. director?

If Gregg could choose, he would want Agent Melinda May, who is played by Ming-Na Wen, to be the new S.H.I.E.L.D. director.

"She has earned that right and she is a commander that Coulson would absolutely follow with absolute loyalty," he said.

The actor has no idea who will be the new big man (or woman) or if a decision has already been made by the producers, but he thinks who will be chosen will depend on whether or not Nick Fury will be coming back and who other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents will pick.

Do you agree with Coulson? Who do you think should be the next S.H.I.E.L.D. director? Let us know in the comments below!
