Bethesda plans on making history with Fallout 4 by offering console players a chance to access and create mods. This is something that was previously only accessible for PC gamers.
Mods allow players to customize their gaming experience. That means players can change the way the game's environments look, change the way characters look and do a lot of other weird things to the game to make it funnier, scarier or just more interesting.
Now, Bethesda wants to bring the fun of mods to console players for the first time ever. Right now, modding is currently in beta on the Xbox One, but that goes public soon. For those who haven't yet tried mods, though, what do they look like? How do they work?
Bethesda will answer these questions today, May 27, by live-streaming Fallout 4 mods for the Xbox One at 4 p.m. EST. This will be a good first look at how mods will work on the console, and should explain how to access them in the game. For those interested in checking out the livestream, it airs on Twitch.
A video released this week, starring Xbox Live director of programming Major Nelson, demonstrates a few mods available on the system, including new weapons and tools, as well as a mod that allows players to build settlements anywhere in the Wasteland.
There are many more mods available for the Xbox One version of Fallout 4, although don't expect to see any mods listed that violate copyright/license, contain adult content or require huge hardware specs.
Although Xbox One gets the Fallout 4 mods first, they will land on the PlayStation 4 soon, too. Bethesda also released a Creation Kit for players to make their own mods earlier this year. The company even came up with a way to have mods accessible within the game itself, so that players never have to leave the game to find and install a mod.
"For Fallout 4, our goal was to make Mods easier and more accessible than ever before - for both the creators and the players," Bethesda writes on its blog. "By building an all-new system with Bethesda.net we've made a huge leap forward in achieving that."
Fallout 4 is available now on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
