It all began nine years ago, during the first season of How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM), when Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) woke up to find a woman on one side of his bed, and a pineapple on the other.
Ted never managed to figure out where exactly the pineapple came from and how it came to be on his night stand. The incident became a running gag on the series, referred to as "the Pineapple Incident," and the mystery was never solved even when the show ended.
But finally, the big question has an answer in the deleted scenes included in the boxed DVD set, which will be released on Sept. 23.
The exclusive clip can be seen on Buzzfeed, and it reveals that in season 9, episode 20, there was slightly more that happened when Ted visited the home of his ex-girlfriend's ex-husband, The Captain, played by Kyle Maclachlan.
As Ted was leaving his home, The Captain and Ted seemed to have settled their grievances (afterall, The Captain's wife, Zoey, left him for Ted).
"You stole one thing from me, one thing I can forgive. Steal more than one thing, well, that's another matter," The Captain tells Ted as he walks out the door.
And after just a few steps, Ted realizes that Zoey was not the only thing he stole from The Captain.
On the porch sits a pineapple, which Ted inquires about. As it turns out, The Captain liked to place pineapples outside his front door -- a real-life sea captain's tradition that symbolizes hospitality.
Upon realizing that The Captain also puts the tropical fruit outside his door at his townhouse in the city, Ted has a flashback to 2005 when, in a drunken stupor, Ted comes upon the pineapple outside The Captains city home, and walks away with it.
Finally, one of HIMYM's biggest mysteries, solved!
