Remember Yooka-Laylee — the 3D platformer from the folks who masterminded Donkey Kong and Banjo-Kazooie — which made quite a splash on Kickstarter in 2015? Backers of the game will be pleased to know that the developer has shared new details and screenshots of much-awaited title.
On Friday, May 20, developer Playtonic Games revealed in a post on its website that the more than 80,000 backers who pledged their support for Yooka-Laylee on KickStarter would be able to get their hands on a demo of the game — dubbed Toybox — as early as July. The Kickstarter backers would be the first to play the game.
"The wait is almost over ... the Toybox is coming — and we're happy to finally confirm that the standalone gameplay experience will be available in July for Kickstarter backers who opted for appropriate tiers," explains Playtonic Games.
For those wondering why the developer took longer than expected to release the title, Playtonic Games disclosed that its plans expanded during the course of Toybox's development.
Interestingly, the demo will not be a typical one and will be sandbox-style, which basically means that gamers will have a freehold to explore and get a feel of the title. It will also be "spoiler-free," asserts the developer.
The developer also shared details on what gamers can expect from the game. The update gives us a glimpse into some new screenshots, as well as introduces two characters — Dr. Quack and Dr. Puzz. Dr. Quack is described as a "ruthless, exosuit-wearing fowl," whereas Dr. Puzz — the tentacled technician — is his former prodigy who is naïve, sweet and has broken away from Quack Corp.
Gamers will encounter the villainous Captain B, who is attempting to take over all the literature in the world. Players will also have plenty of collectibles to seek on their journey. The adventures of Yooka and Laylee will see the buddy-duo seek Pagies, magical creatures that are needed to explore the Grand Tomes. The pair attempt to unlock ancient mysteries of books while battling the Machiavellian Captain B.
While the developer shared details of Yooka-Laylee, it did not divulge the exact release date for the game. Playtonic Games merely let on that it was "working towards the same release window penned last year."
If the developer sticks to the previously pegged time window, then we suggest you mark your calendars for October this year! In the meantime, check out the new screenshots for Yooka-Laylee.
