This Is What Went Into Making The World's Longest Pizza In Italy

Pizza chefs in Italy recently landed a spot in the Guinness World Records for making the world's longest pizza.

One hundred chefs in the city of Naples teamed up to cook a Neapolitan that measured up to 6,082 feet, setting a new record with a pizza stretching more than a mile long.

According to the Guinness World Records, the pizza recipe included "2,000 kg of flour, 1,600 kg of tomatoes, 2,000 kg of fiordilatte cheese and 200 liters of olive oil — all of which was sourced from local suppliers in the Campania region, 'the home of pizza.'"

The record-breaking creation took about 11 hours to make, and was put on display along the seafront of Naples.

Five specially-made portable wood-fire ovens on wheels were used for the "L'Unione fa la Pizza" event.

Lucia Sinigagliesi, Guinness World Records adjudicator, confirmed the new record. Any pizza left over by visitors was donated to Camper Onlus Association, Italian Red Cross and the Chicchi di Grano Association.

The event was organized by Alessandro Marinacci from Naples' Pizza Village, along with local flour producer Caputo, according to the Daily Mail.

"It's absolutely a point of pride for our city, which is the home of pizza," Marinacci said.

The old record for the longest pizza in the world, held by La Pizza+1 of Sante Ludovico, NIPfood of Dovilio Nardi and Tomato World Week 2015, measured at 5,234 feet and was created at Milan's Expo 2015 World Fair in June of last year.

That pizza was made with 3,306 pounds of mozzarella cheese and 4,409 pounds of tomato sauce, weighing in at five tons and taking more than 60 pizza-makers who joined forces to create it in 18 hours.

More than 35,000 slices were handed out to visitors who attended the expo, and about 984 feet of pizza was donated to the Banco Alimentare food bank, as well as given to charities that help those in need.

The largest pizza in the world, however, was created by Dovilio Nardi, Andrea Mannocchi, Marco Nardi, Matteo Nardi and Matteo Giannotte of NIPfood at Fiera Roma in Rome in December 2012. Its total surface area was 13,580.28 square feet.
