To call the first trailer for the Ghostbusters reboot a failure is an understatement. It wasn't funny and it struck a strange tone for the franchise.
Eventually, the trailer would go on to become one of the most disliked trailers on YouTube, though that speaks more to angry fanboys upset with having a female cast of Ghostbusters and less about the trailer itself.
Thankfully, the film's second trailer is a major improvement from the first. Featuring some genuinely funny moments, a better look at the film's ghosts and a tease of plenty of action to come, it's safe to say this is the kind of trailer fans were expecting all along.
That being said, it does manage to spoil what is no doubt a major moment in the movie: the arrival of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.
In the original film, the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man served as the epic conclusion to an already-wild ride — the seemingly innocent marshmallow mascot transforming into a Godzilla-sized terror that the Ghostbusters have to defeat. No doubt, the character will serve a similar purpose here, as a machine that amplifies paranormal activity looks to have created the gooey monster.
It's a little unclear exactly why the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man is back in this reboot. After all, the new Ghostbusters isn't a sequel to the two films that came before. Why, then, would the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man return? His appearance in the first film is solely because Dan Aykroyd's character of Raymond Stantz accidentally thinks the creature into existence, after all.
Whatever the reason for the creature's return, this isn't the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man you remember. This new version of the character is way more terrifying, looking half-burnt and far gooier than his fluffy former self. That being said, doesn't an intentionally scary-looking Marshmallow Man kind of defeat the purpose of the original character? After all, the first version of the character was so funny (and scary), thanks to his lovable outward appearance. He looked like he wanted to cuddle, not destroy the city.
Sadly, we'll have to wait for the final film to learn more about this new version of the colossal marshmallow man. You can check out the trailer for yourself below. Stay Puft makes an appearance at the very end. Ghostbusters is in theaters July 15.
