Nvidia launched its new gaming GPU — the GTX 1080 — on May 6, and the company claims that it is cheaper and faster than Nvidia's previous GPUs. Jen-Hsun Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, also said that the GTX "1080 is the new king."
Here's a look at what reviewers are saying about the new gaming GPU.
"It's Vega that stands a chance to unseat Nvidia's new king, but for now I'm 100 percent confident in recommending the GTX 1080 to anyone willing to part with the cash. It's a terrific value regardless of what's ahead," says Jason Evangelho of Forbes.
"The 1080 runs at 1,607 MHz (up to 1,733 MHz in boost mode) and packs in 8 GB of Micron's new DDR5X RAM. In comparison, last year's 980 Ti card clocked in at 1,000 MHz with 6 GB of standard DDR5 memory. Unlike CPUs (which now reach into the 4 GHz range), video cards haven't seen massive megahertz bumps over the years, so the 1080's numbers are seriously impressive," says Engadget's Devindra Hardawar.
"If you're a gamer looking for something that will handle 4K gaming at nearly maxed out quality, the GTX 1080 is the card to get. Or if you want a GPU that has at least a reasonable chance of making use of a 1440p 144 Hz G-Sync display, or a curved ultrawide 3,440 x 1,440 100Hz display, again: this is the card to get," says Jarred Walton of PC Gamer.
"The 1080 doesn't need as much power or cooling as previous generation cards. Thus, the typically noisier blower design becomes far more appealing. There's a single eight-pin power connector at the rear of the 1080, which feeds its TDP of just 180W. Considering the 1080 is faster than both of the 980 Ti and Titan X, which pull out 250W, that's an impressive improvement to efficiency," says Mark Walton of ARS Technica.
"The leap over the GTX 980 is nothing short of insane. While the GTX 980 delivered frame rates roughly 18 to 35 percent higher than its direct predecessor, the GTX 780, the new GeForce GTX 1080 surges ahead by a whopping 70-plus percent in every game tested. That's crazy," says Brad Chacos of PC World. "The GTX 1080 is everything Nvidia promised and more."
The GTX 1080 will be released in some markets on May 27 at an estimated price tag of $599.
