A pet reunion story that is still in-the-making surrounds Gidget, a 7-year old Jack Russell Terrier who went missing from her home in Pennsylvania on April 22. She inexplicably turned up in a shelter 3,000 miles away in Tualatin, a suburb of Portland, Oregon.
Reportedly, a Good Samaritan brought Gidget to the County's Bonnie L. Hays Animal Shelter. She was thin, but her eyes were energetic and her fur looked healthy despite being away from home for 4 and a half months.
It remains a mystery how Gidget ended up so far away from home. Some speculate that she might have been in the care of another human before she was brought to the shelter as a stray. However, the circumstances behind her long journey across the country may never be known.
Gidget was positively identified as the missing Pennsylvania Terrier, thanks to a microchip embedded under her skin which contained all her owner's information which was updated and correct.
The owner has been notified and is eager to be reunited with the energetic little dog.
But the next steps to the reunion may not be that simple.
Her owner said that she does not have the means to travel to Portland in order to get beloved pet.
Unfortunately, the shelter does not have the funds to transport Gidget back home either.
According to Deborah Wood, who works at the animal shelter where Gidget is currently staying, they can't wait to finally reunite Gidget with her owner and they will work hard to find creative solutions to make sure it happens as soon as possible.
"Gidget's owner clearly loves her, and has been trying for the past couple of weeks to find a way to get her home," she said.
The best scenario she suggests is for a volunteer travelling from Portland back to Pennsylvania to bring Gidget with them and take her back to her waiting family.
