YouTube For iOS Gets VR Update, Receives Google Cardboard Support

iPhone users can now peruse YouTube's Cardboard mode, a split screen view that works in tandem with Google Cardboard (as well as other VR headsets), as the YouTube app for iOS has finally received a VR update.

While Android users of YouTube benefited from complete support for Cardboard in November 2015 itself, iOS users have had a long wait. However, thanks to the update to the iOS version of the app, iPhone users will finally be able to make use of the Google Cardboard support.

The latest YouTube app for iOS has the version 11.18 and weighs 52.7 MB. The updated app lets users access the option to view content in VR mode by tapping the Cardboard icon that is located at the upper right portion of any video.

It is important to note that even though the update brings support for Cardboard, it does not imply that a regular YouTube video will magically transform into 360-degree content. Essentially, in the Cardboard mode, one is viewing the video in the theater mode.

Here's how to activate the setting for the Cardcoard mode for an immersive experience in 360 degrees:

Step 1: Update the YouTube app for iOS to the latest version

Step 2: Open the app and begin to play any video of your choice.

Step 3: Click/tap on the "More" icon, which is located at the screen's top-right corner.

Step 4: Select the Cardboard option. Next, insert your compatible iPhone to the VR headset.

You are now good to go and ready to view a regular video in the Cardboard mode for an immersive 360-degree experience!

You can also select VR-ready clips from the YouTube 360 Videos channel, which utilizes the Cardboard mode effectively. How? These videos have been shot in 360 degrees. These video clips will not even require one to select options from th emenu as they have a Cardboard icon on the main screen.

Earlier in March, Google introduced the SDK design that was Cardboard-oriented to make it easier for developers to integrate 360-degree videos seamlessly. The latest update to YouTube iOS is yet another step from Google to augment the iPhone VR support.
