Left wondering if you could survive on Mars like Mark Watney did in The Martian? Well you can soon put yourself to the test and see if you have what it takes to overcome serious obstacles when facing the harsh conditions on the red planet from the comfort of your home.
Darewise Entertainment and Nvizzio Creations developed a new sandbox MMO video game called ROKH that has gamers colonizing on Mars with one main objective: to survive.
The player is taken to the planet as part of the Mars Colonization Program, and starts off with just their astronaut suit. In order to survive in ROKH, the gamer must craft and build to be able get basic necessities like oxygen, food and water.
ROKH features a 150-square mile open-world map based on data collected by NASA that is available to explore. Since this is a sandbox game, the player will set their own goals depending on their current needs. There are no missions or specific quests.
Instead, the player starts by building a base. They can choose to do this alone or with a crew. Tap into the multiplayer capabilities to have a better chance to survive. But since other players are also colonizing on Mars, you will have to make sure you keep the peace so that war doesn't start on this already-volatile planet.
It's smart to be on good terms with other players so that you can trade resources. You will have to craft items like weapons and tools to be able to explore the terrain safely by mining or extracting natural resources. The planet has many resources available, you will just have to be creative in order to access them. Later on, you can customize your tools and weapons.
No matter what you do in the game, you must remember that survival is key. This means every action should be focused on obtaining food and water, avoiding injuries and staying protected from the intense heat, cold and radiation.
Developed using Unreal Engine 4, ROKH features striking visuals that include red sand dunes and deep valleys that bring Mars to life on the screen. Also expect active volcanoes and ancient river beds as part of the landscape.
The game includes realistic scenarios an astronaut would face on Mars. You won't want to get stuck in a sandstorm or be stranded in the freezing cold overnight.
While exploring the landscape, you may even uncover a crash site or abandoned bases - perfect for raiding.
Led by Darewise Entertainment's creative director Benjamin Charbit (who has previously worked on Assassin's Creed), the team has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help crowdfund this project.
Darewise Entertainment has raised more than $4,000 of its more than $114,000 goal with 30 more days to go.
Developed for the PC platform, ROKH is scheduled for release on Steam early access in September. Those who pledge as little as $11 will get the rewards and access to the Steam key when the game is released.
