"Guardians of the Galaxy" is no longer the top dog at the box office, as it was kicked to the curb by "No Good Deed" and the family friendly film, "Dolphin Tale 2." Both movies have managed to push "Guardians" to the third spot on the list, but we wonder if these films have the legs to fend off Marvel's big summer splash for a whole week.
"No Good Deed" started off well with a gross of around $24.5 million over its first weekend at the box office. However, we should bear in mind that this film has gotten mainly negative reviews thus far, and might not be able to keep "Guardians of the Galaxy" at bay.
We understand that the film is about a woman who shelters a convict who is on the run from the law. The movie is starred by Taraji P. Henson and Idris Elba from "Person of Interest" and "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom," respectively.
"It's a movie that we really loved and felt that it was going to win," according to Rory Bruer, the distribution chief at Sony. "You have to give it to the cast in Idris and Taraji. Their chemistry together is fantastic."
On the matter of "Dolphin Tale 2," its reviews are more positive when compared with "No Good Deed," but that doesn't mean the reviews paint a great film. It is a family oriented film that is obviously about dolphins, and it managed to gross around $16.5 million during its first weekend.
That's not bad for a film about dolphins.
"Guardians of the Galaxy" grossed only $8 million this time around, while "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" could only muster $4.8 million.
At the end of the day, we expect "No Good Deed" to bomb at the box office, pushing "Dolphin Tale 2" to the top, and "Guardians" into second place.
Since "Dolphin Tale 2" is a family-oriented film, it could have the legs to hold up with "Guardians" until the film "Boxtrolls" comes out on Sept. 26, although it could have been best if it was released at a later date as it could have to compete directly with "Guardians of the Galaxy." No movie studio wants that right now.
