Google's Gmail just got better as it rolls out an update on April 25, which brings a new, interesting feature: support for Microsoft Exchange in Android across a variety of devices.
Thanks to this new capability, users can now spot a dedicated Exchange option when adding in their new accounts to the email client.
Yes, since Google rolled out the version 5.0 for the app, Gmail already handles Exchange accounts, but only on Nexus devices. This has enabled users of these devices to log into their corporate email addresses via the email client. With the recent update on board, Gmail for Android now sits at version 6.4.
"Exchange support was previously only available on our Nexus devices, but as of today, Exchange support covers mail, contacts and calendar data in Android across all devices," says a Google spokesperson, via VentureBeat.
Google says it is rolling out the update in waves, and this may land on users' devices in the next three or more days. At any rate, the amped up update should be live via Play Store over the succeeding days. However, for those who wish to get the first dibs of the refreshed app can also download it via APK Mirror.
Exchange Server actually began as an internal mail server of Microsoft. Eventually, it was rolled out to the public as Exchange email client. However, it was then discontinued in favor of Microsoft Outlook.
What this means is that it seems like Google is aware that Exchange is still used as the standard for work-related email, contact and calendar syncing.
By packing this nifty feature into the app, employees of several companies who use Exchange are now able to access their email, calendars or contacts on their Android devices without the need to install another app to do so.
This is also seen as part of the Mountain View-based company's effort to please people who wish to mix their personal information and work in the same email client.
Apart from Exchange accounts, the updated Gmail for Android provides support for Yahoo Mail, Outlook.com, IMAP/POP accounts along with Gmail, of course.
Long story short, this update is another move Google is taking to make Gmail a practicable alternative solution for users who are on the hunt for an Android app to house all their email needs.
