Porsche 718 Cayman Officially Debuts, Marking The First Time Coupé And Roadster Share Identical Engine Output

For those looking for a rush against the elements on the streets and who want to do so in speed and style, Porsche's 718 Cayman is the answer.

Naturally, of course, it'll only fit you and one other person.

Nonetheless, Porsche's latest Cayman doesn't actually look that much different from the last Porsche Cayman, but the difference is on the inside.

For the first time ever, the new 718 Cayman is powered by a four-cylinder engine. Similarly, the Cayman is now just as powerful as its ragtop counterpart, the 718 Boxster.

The flat-six engines of the previous breed of 718 Cayman have been replaced by two turbocharged flat-fours — one 2.0 liter and the other a 2.5 liter. The 2.0 liter pumps out 300 horsepower, while the 2.5 liter offers a bit more at 350 horsepower. That's an extra 25 horsepower from the older engine type.

"We are committed to the tradition of Porsche — and so we take one step back in order to take a leap into the dynamic future of our mid-engine Sports Cars ... Following on the tradition of the 1957 718 with its flat-four engine, the 718 model range builds on this heritage with new flat-four turbo engines developed by Porsche," the company writes in its press release.

Besides the powertrain refinements that thrust the car forward from zero to 60 mph in just four seconds flat, Porsche also updated the 718 Cayman's chassis with firmer springs and sway bars, retuned shock absorbers, and new steering wheel rack that Porsche says is 10 percent faster to center, thus further improving the Cayman's already impressive handling. In fact, even its rear wheels stand one inch wider than the previous model.

Inside, Porsche gave its new 718 Cayman a 918 Spyder-inspired steering wheel and an updated dashboard, while also including its proprietary Porsche Communication Management (PCM) technology that allows the vehicle to support Apple CarPlay and its own Porsche Car Connect.

As for pricing, this year's 718 Cayman is actually slightly more affordable compared with its ragtop convertible 718 Boxster twin. That's another first. The 718 Cayman is priced to start around $58,000, while the Cayman will be about $70,000. Overall, that's nearly $3,000 less than the Boxster.
