Sprint woos students with free talk, text, data offer for 12 months

Sprint is trying to entice students with its free talk, text and data offer for 12 months.

Sprint and Best Buy have teamed up to announce that students can get 12 months of free talk, text and data from Sprint, when they buy a Sprint handset at the Student Activated Price at Best Buy and activate a new service on an Unlimited, My Way plan.

Students who avail the latest Sprint offer will get unlimited talk, text and 1GB data per month, for smartphones or unlimited talk and text for basic phones. The offer does not require a student to sign a new two-year contract. The promotional offer can save students up to $70 per month and the offer is available exclusively at Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile stores nationwide. The offer is only available in-store and students cannot avail the offer online. It starts from November 18 and runs through January 4, 2014.

"We are excited about this groundbreaking approach to helping students connect to the latest wireless technology and to the advantages of today's mobile learning environment," said Jeff Hallock, senior vice president of marketing for Sprint. "As a market leader in consumer electronics committed to improving the customer experience and to lessening its impact on the environment, Best Buy is a perfect partner for Sprint in revolutionizing the way we bring new products and services to students."

Sprint is also wooing students to bring friends as well to the network. If a student brings in a friend on contract with the network, then the student can get an additional 12 months free. A student can actually get two years of mobile usage free if a friend joins the carrier as well.

However, Sprint is not waiving off the activation fee for the offer, and students will still have to pay $36 to activate their new connection.

With the holiday season just about to start, the latest student offer may give Sprint an edge over other carriers in the country. An edge it desperately needs.
