T-Mobile vs. Sprint: Where should you trade-in your smartphone?

As the holiday shopping season comes nearer and new mobile devices are launched every now and then, U.S. carriers are finding new schemes to beat each other in an aim to attract new customers as well as to keep the existing subscribers. T-Mobile and Sprint are two of the rivaling carriers that vow to match or even supersede the other when it comes to offering the best trade-in deals.

T-Mobile's offer is based on the company's goal to help the wireless consumers in the U.S. get the very best deal on the hottest new devices. One of these devices includes the much-anticipated iPhone 6 by Apple.

T-Mobile says that consumers who are looking into upgrading to the iPhone 6 will have the chance to do so without any worries. The company says that it is monitoring the deals from other competitions in the wireless arena. The move is to ensure that those who come in and trade-in their old smartphones will truly get a decent deal as compared to the ones that are offered by AT&T, Verizon and Sprint.

"For years, the big carriers have been ripping off their customers with low-ball trade-in values, so we're putting an end to that and guaranteeing we'll give customers what they deserve - the best value in the industry," said president and CEO John Legere of T-Mobile.

With Sprint, the company announced that it will meet or beat the pricing of all their competitors in order to deliver the best trade-in values. The company will match the buyback pricing scheme of all major U.S. carriers on all new subscriptions. In 2013, Sprint launched their award-winning Sprint Buyback phone trade-in program which had enabled them to put over $100 million back in customer's pockets.

"Sprint remains the leader in mobile phone trade in programs," said Kate Pearce who works as a strategist and senior consultant at Compass Intelligence.

The offer from T-Mobile is valid for a limited period. It will commence from Sept. 17 onwards. Transaction can be done either by phone or by visiting the company's website. To qualify, users should have an eligible device for trade-in, qualifying credit, and new device purchase along with qualifying service.

Sprint offers upfront in-store credit and as much as $300 for eligible smartphones. Customers are allowed to trade-in as many as three handsets per line and at any preferred time or even five handsets in a year. On the other hand, T-Mobile only offers one smartphone trade-in for every line and allows a customer to trade-in his phone only when he's purchasing a new handset. Moreover, Sprint customers can avail of the company's trade-in credit any time that they want, whether they are purchasing new accessories, buying a new handset, or wanting to use their hard-earned trade-in credit when paying for their bill.
