With upward of 20 stories per day being posted to NewYorker.com, the New Yorker magazine announced on April 12 that it would be taking its content to a new app, titled the New Yorker Today. The stories streamed to the app are hand-selected by the magazine's editors, and it's currently free to download on iPhones.
Digital and print subscribers have the option of signing in to their account on the app and gaining free access to its content forever. In addition to having a wide variety of articles at their fingertips, users will be able to enjoy approximately 8,000 of the publication's cartoons.
"You can read us via Facebook or Twitter, or inside of Flipboard, or because someone sent you a link on WhatsApp," The New Yorker wrote in its announcement. "You can read us through our home page, or via an endless social-media stream. But, more and more, and wherever you are, you're likely to be reading us on a mobile phone. In fact, one of our pleasant discoveries in recent years is that our readers will finish even our longest pieces — as much as 10 and 15,000 words — on their phones."
However, the app is not just limited to the articles produced by the New Yorker editorial staff. Podcasts, slideshows and videos also make up the content on the New Yorker Today.
The announcement specifies that the app will remain free for "a while, at least." In the App Store, the New Yorker Today's description states that the free trial period ends after one month. Once it concludes, individuals have the option to subscribe for $8.99 per month, assuming they don't already have a digital or print subscription account.
Thus far, reviews in the App Store show that users are relatively pleased with the New Yorker Today. It has close to five stars (the highest possible rating), and users praise everything from its elegant design to its cartoon browser.
The New Yorker has been published since 1925. In recent years, the publication has hosted the New Yorker Festival, the New Yorker Radio Hour and the New Yorker Presents, in an effort to expand through other media outlets.
