In only five short days Apple is expected to unveil the next iteration of its iPhone, the iPhone 6, along with the highly anticipated iWatch.
But it seems as though Apple might have yet another big announcement up its sleeve for the Sept. 9 event.
Apple might be preparing to unveil the iPad Air 2 alongside the iPhone 6 and iWatch, which is surprising considering the company has never announced both a new iPhone and iPad at the same event. Apple typically unveils its iPad in October.
The predictions for Apple to announce the iPad at the press event come from Ming-Chi Kuo, a KGI Securities analyst who has a pretty good track record when it comes to Apple. Despite this, it's doubtful that he's correct with this one, as three big announcements would lead to a pretty crowded event.
The iPad Air 2 is expected to come with an antireflective screen coating and Apple's next generation of processors, the A8. It will also likely include a Touch ID fingerprint sensor and the option to get the device in gold.
Some reports also indicate that the upcoming device could include 2 GB of RAM, which is double what was offered in the first generation of iPad Air. One of the main reasons for the extra RAM is likely the addition of iOS 8's multitasking features, which could suck up a little more RAM than iOS 7.
As for the design of the device, the iPad Air 2 will likely be thinner with some other minor changes, such as redesigned speaker grills. Leaks also suggest that the device will include two microphones rather than one.
The iPad Mini is also expected to be released sometime later this year, though probably not at the press event. Unfortunately for fans of the iPad Mini, the device is expected to get the fingerprint scanning capabilities and not much else in the way of upgrades.
The iPad was first released in 2010, and contrary to what was expected it thrust tablet computers into the mainstream. Apple then released the iPad Mini, a smaller version of the iPad, in 2012. The iPad Air was then released in November 2013, the predecessor to the iPad that is now said to be released at Apple's press event.
Apple was previously expected to hold a separate press event in October to release the new generation of iPads. If Kuo's findings turn out to be correct, that likely will not happen.
Leaks surrounding the upcoming press event continue to be released. Yesterday it was revealed Apple was partnering with Nordstrom for its new mobile payment system. Before that we found out the display of the iPhone 6 would likely be much sharper and have a higher resolution, offering triple retina.
