The 1999 science fiction cult classic comedy film, Galaxy Quest, was close to getting its sequel 17 years later but now that the world has lost Alan Rickman, it seems Amazon may not be too keen on moving forward with the planned sequel.
It actually is not too shocking because, as we have said before, Rickman's performance in Galaxy Quest was just plain brilliant.
We know that Rickman's co-star Tim Allen revealed in January that the sequel for the cult comedy was being worked out prior to Rickman's demise and the production would have to move forward without Rickman if it will push through.
"It's been a big shock on many levels," he said of Rickman's passing.
Perhaps Amazon also knows that Rickman's death has left a huge void that is not easy to fill and a Galaxy Quest without the British actor will not feel nearly the same.
Sam Rockwell, Rickman's co-star in the film, was on a Nerdist podcast and revealed that most of the cast were ready to sign for the sequel but things went downhill after Rickman's passing. After that, everyone's schedules just cannot seem to match up, including Allen who is still quite busy with his television series, Last Man Standing.
"We were ready to sign up, and Alan Rickman passed away and Tim Allen wasn't available [...] And how do you fill that void of Alan Rickman? That's a hard void to fill," Rockwell said.
While fans may be disappointed with the sudden decision to scrap the sequel, Rockwell did ask a very valid question because it is not just a matter of finding an actor who looks like Rickman or can imitate his very distinct voice. Rickman is just the kind of person whose every performance stands out so, unless Amazon had a plan to make a Galaxy Quest without Dr. Lazarus, perhaps it was really the best option to leave the film alone.
