Reaffirming its commitment to the global delivery of tablets under 10 inches, though maybe not Windows variants, Lenovo revealed the Android-based Tab S8 at IFA 2014 in Berlin.
Weighing in at just over half a pound and sporting a thin 0.31 inches frame, the 8-inch Tab S8 delivers a full HD display with a retail price of $199. The Tab S8 leverages the power of an Intel Atom Z3745 processor based on Intel's Burst Performance tech, to fall into the sweet spot between performance and power efficiency, according to Erik Reid, vice president of Intel Mobile.
"With Lenovo's Tab S8 tablet powered by an Intel Atom processor, consumers have the freedom to experience seamless, powerful performance with great battery life," said Reid. "They can enjoy the content they want on this new Intel-based tablet, such as games or videos."
The Tab S8 wears a 1.6-MP chat cam on it's face and carries an 8-MP camera on its back. Running on Android 4.4 KitKat, the Tab S8 has 2 GB of temporary memory and 16 GB of long-term storage space.
Along with the Tab S8, Lenovo debuted a gaming desktop and laptop in Berlin.
The Y70 Touch, a gaming laptop with a touch display, is blue and green on the inside with an i7 processor from Intel and a 4-GB Nvidia GTX 860. The Erazer X315 gaming desktop's innards are red through and through, as the system is powered by a quad-core AMD Kaveri and an AMD R9 series graphics card.
"Our latest consumer tablet and PCs give consumers even more choice so they can select the right device that fits best into their mobile lifestyle," said Jeff Meredith, vice president of marketing for Lenovo's Mobile Business Group. "From the super-mobile Tab S8 tablet to the Y70 and Erazer X315 gaming PC, we've optimized each one to meet the diverse needs of customers."
Lenovo's release of a new, 8-inch Android tablet falls in line with part of the comments the Chinese tech company made back in July. Lenovo stated it was clearing U.S. shelves of the ThinkPad 8, its 8-inch Windows tablet, but wasn't moving away from producing more 7-inch and 8-inch tablets -- it also promised more Windows-based tablets, even in the United States.
"Our model mix changes as per customer demand, and although we are no longer selling ThinkPad 8 in the U.S., and we have sold out of Miix 8-inch, we are not getting out of the small-screen Windows tablet business as was reported by the media," Lenovo said in July. "In short, we will continue to sell both 8- and 10-inch Windows tablets in both the U.S. and non-U.S. markets."
Lenovo says the Tab S8 will be available this month with models starting at $199; the Y70 Touch will be available beginning in October with models starting at $1,299; and the Erazer X315 will be available in North America beginning in November with models starting at $599.
