PlayStation 4 System Update Brings New Social Features And Expands Remote Play

Sony will roll out a new PlayStation 4 update on April 6, including a lot of new features that should make gamers who like to play with their friends really happy.

The company recently specified more details about these features, which include more ways for players to get social with their fellow gamers.

"While we outlined some of the features last month before our beta program started, we wanted to give a more detailed look at the update and share some new info," PlayStation wrote on its blog. "We're making it easier to play together with friends, adding the ability to appear offline, and more."

One of the new features are notifications to let you know when certain friends come online. Players can choose which friends they want notifications for by simply selecting that friend, pressing "Options" and then selecting "Notify When Online."

For players who like to schedule gameplay sessions, the update will also allow the system to schedule those events with friends. Players can create events by choosing a day, time and game and then choose which friends get invited. Once that event begins, everyone registered for it will automatically get added to the party. Events can also get shared to groups and communities so that other players can sign up.

The "Play Together" feature lets all members of a party see who is online and what they're playing and allows users to join others' games or start games together with friends.

The good news is that gamers don't have to get social if they don't want to: the 3.50 update also offers a way to appear offline if you don't feel like letting others know you're around or just aren't really feeling that social.

The update also adds Dailymotion to Live from PlayStation.

Finally, the PlayStation 4 update expands remote play to work with PCs running Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, as well as Mac computers running OS X 10.10 or OS X 10.11.

"Of course, there are lots of other refinements and improvements to the system software overall," PlayStation wrote. "Let us know what you think in the comments. As always, we're listening and appreciate the feedback!"
