Walt Disney is revisiting one of the most famous fairy tales ever told, giving Snow White a revisionist spin to introduce the character of Rose Red.
A live-action film, Rose Red, was picked up with a script from Justin Merz, who is also producing the project, and a pitch from Evan Daugherty, who reworked the original script. Tripp Vinson is also on board, producing via Vinson Films, while Tara Farney executive-produces.
Merz wrote The Boxcar Children, an animated film released in 2014. Daugherty, on the other hand, has experience playing around with Snow White's tale as he wrote Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman, which starred Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth. He also has Divergent and 2014's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles under his belt.
As a character, Rose Red first appeared in a collection of fairy tales by the Grimm brothers in an adventure of her own, not at all related to Show White and the Seven Dwarfs, which the Disney animated classic took inspiration from.
Disney's Rose Red was originally meant to be a standalone feature but Daugherty provided the revisionist spin that relates the character to the animated classic and gives Rose Red the feeling of a companion piece.
This time, Rose Red will be transposed into Snow White's story, turning her into a major player in later events. When Snow White bites into the poisoned apple and falls into Sleeping Death, Rose Red comes in, the estranged sister who undertakes a dangerous mission with the seven dwarfs to look for a way to break the curse and bring Snow White back to life.
Rose Red marks the third fairy tale that Vinson is setting up with Disney in the past eight months. The other two are Genies and Prince Charming, an Aladdin prequel and a project based on the iconic character commonly seen in fairy tales, respectively.
There is no word yet on when Rose Red will be released.
