While showing off 44 new games that are inbound for the PlayStation 4 and Vita, Sony revealed it's planning to release the next chapter of the Dragon Quest series onto its latest console and Square Enix says mobile enthusiasts should expect more of the series to arrive on smartphones and tablets soon.
Many of the games announced at the 2014 Tokyo Trade Show were already revealed elsewhere, though Sony, which calls Japan home, unveiled new games to help push sales of the PS4 in its home market to match the speed of the console's adoption in the U.S. and Europe.
Dragon Quest Heroes brings its hack'n'slash game play back to the Sony console, after skipping a generation. With two iterations of the NES classic Dragon Quest, the latest entry into the series, Dragon Quest Heroes, will pick up from Dragon Quest VIII left off when it told its tale on mobile devices and the PlayStation 2.
Dragon Quest publisher Square Enix also announced that it's planning to release more Dragon Quest games onto mobile devices. Digging a little deeper into its catalog, the publisher said it will release Dragon Quest II and III, originally NES games, onto Android and iOS devices.
Square Enix indicated that it intends to bring Dragon Quest V and VI to smartphones and tablets, though the sheer amount of text stuffed into Dragon Quest VII was said to be virtually impossible to push onto mobile devices. Some of the compromises that have been made in order to port Dragon Quest games onto mobile devices included accelerations to the progression systems and deceleration of the frequency of hostile encounters.
Dragon Quest Heroes' development is said to be in the hands of Omega Force, the developers behind Dynasty warriors and the team behind nearly 50 percent of all Japanese video games.
Dragon Quest Heroes will be available on both the PlayStation 3 and 4 sometime in 2015. Sony will release a silver console stamped with a chrome depiction of Dragon Quest character "Slime" to commemorate the launch of the storied franchise.
Among the likes of previously announced titles, such as the Witcher 3 and Destiny, Sony confirmed a release of Persona 5 for both the PlayStation 3 and 4. The game maker announced the return of Hot Shot's Golf, now dubbed Everybody's Golf, and a new Gundam title.
With Sony's PlayStation 4 arriving in Japan back in February, months behind the console's U.S. release, Akio Morita, nephew of Sony's founder, said the game maker was determined to expand in Japan. And while Sony's console usually experiences much more success there than units from rival Microsoft, the U.S. game maker's Xbox One console goes on sale in Japan in early September.
