There won't be much merriment in Asgard today: 2017's Thor: Ragnarok is possibly the last time Tom Hiddleston's Loki will get screen time in the Marvel cinematic universe.
In an interview with The Daily Beast, Hiddleston hinted that his appearance in Thor: Ragnarok marks his last performance as Thor's crazy, and sometimes evil, brother.
"Thor 3 will be cool because I've not done it for four years," Hiddleston said. "I love working with Chris [Hemsworth]. This will be my last time out of the gate."
But it seems that the decision isn't really in Hiddleston's hands. As far as he knows, he won't appear in any Marvel movies after that, including Avengers: Infinity War.
"I don't know! Honestly, I don't know," he said. "They haven't got their ducks in a row yet. They make it up as they go along."
For fans wondering if Hiddleston is personally done with Loki, that's not much of an answer, but it seems that Marvel is responsible for deciding if he'll show up in later movies set in the same universe.
For those keeping track, that universe is finally starting to show its age. It began way back in 2008 with the first Iron Man film and now includes a variety of other movies and TV shows, all attempting to maintain continuity with each other. By 2018, the Marvel cinematic universe will be a decade old and include a lot of various characters and storylines. By then, it's likely that the actors portraying these characters will eventually want to move on, with Marvel fans craving something new.
Hiddleston isn't resting on his laurels, though: he has plenty of projects to keep him busy, including The Night Manager, which starts airing in the U.S. on AMC next month. He'll also star in another potential blockbuster film, Kong: Skull Island.
"Kong was a change, to play a heroic protagonist - having never really played that role before - in a massive movie," Hiddleston said. "And Jordan's vision for it is really unique: completely different time period, different story, and Kong like you've never seen him before. There is no young movie actress, there is no film director. It's a reimagining of it."
Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters in November in 2017, with Kong: Skull Island arriving earlier that year in March.
