‘The Tick’ Creator Ben Edlund Says Amazon Reboot Will Be ‘Darker And More Grounded’

At a time when superheroes abound both on the big and small screens, it may be the perfect opportunity to introduce "The Tick" back to audiences.

"The Tick" was originally a comic book created by Bedlund which ran in the ‘80s and ‘90s. In 2001, it was adapted as a TV series by Fox but was canceled after just nine episodes. Now, the producers of the TV show have teamed up with Amazon Studios to revive "The Tick," which will be played by Peter Serafinowicz in the new effort.

According to Barry Josephson, executive producer for both the original TV series and the new project, he said that Fox didn't necessarily get "The Tick" when it canceled it. He wasn't sure what they were doing right at the time but they were happy with their output. Unfortunately, averaging 4 million viewers in a week was unacceptable in the TV landscape 15 years ago.

Barring personal attachment to the series, Josephson is confident that rebooting "The Tick" is the way to go because he has been approached constantly in the past by both friends and strangers asking when the blue-clad hero might return.

For the reboot, Edlund will be on board as well to shape "The Tick." But as Amazon has a unique development process, the studio will only be requiring a pilot from them. Whether or not the reboot goes into full production will be determined by the kind of response the pilot gets.

Good thing "The Tick" has a cult following. That, and that apparently Roy Price, Amazon Studios head, liked the original series so much that he can quote lines from it. Hey, it doesn't guarantee a promotion but it's always a good thing when your boss likes you.

So what can today's audience expect from "The Tick"? Edlund is looking at a "darker and more grounded" approach.

"It's going to have a real story, a real hero's myth, ... That's kind of the situation where right now that's an open field in this area of entertainment," said the comic book creator.
