Any gamer who has attempted to tackle Dark Souls knows how difficult the game can get. In fact, it's not just difficult, but often close to impossible to make any progress through the game, particularly without taking on a lot of damage and a lot of dying.
Back in February, though, one player not only played through the whole game without dying, but also made claims that he did it without taking on any damage: no hits and no deaths. To prove his point? He uploaded his entire playthrough on Twitch.
The player, The_Happy_Hobbit, claimed that this playthrough was "world record-setting" and that his playthrough made him the first gamer to accomplish such a daunting task.
Although the gaming community was mostly impressed with this player's level of skill, one person doubts the validity of his claims: Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki.
"I don't believe the player who says he completed the original Dark Souls without taking a hit — it would be amazing but I think it's just an elaborate rumor!" Miyazaki said in an interview with Wired UK. "Some of the stuff the community has done, collaborating on Twitch, or playing with Guitar Hero controllers, is incredible though. I've been very happy to see that kind of creativity. I don't think I'd ever put in trophies or anything to instigate a particularly strange play style though."
The interview didn't indicate, though, if Miyazaki actually watched the playthrough on Twitch, which includes footage of The_Happy_Hobbit taking down the game's final boss with just three hits, something only a truly accomplished gamer could manage, someone who could probably also complete the game without taking on a single hit.
Miyazaki also spoke about why he wanted to create games that are so difficult, including the Dark Souls titles, which often leave players frustrated and ready to throw their controllers out the window.
"It's just something required to make this style of game," he said. "Ever since Demon's Souls, I've really been pursuing making games that give players a sense of accomplishment by overcoming tremendous odds."
Although Dark Souls III is now available in Japan, it will hit stores in the U.S. on April 12.
