Apple sends out Sept. 9 press invites: What can we expect?

Apple has sent out invites for an event on Sept. 9 in Cupertino, Calif., the hometown of Apple.

The company has kept what will be announced completely under wraps, simply saying "wish we could tell you more" on the invite.

The event will be held at the Flint Center for Performing Arts, which is the same location where Steve Jobs unveiled the first Mac computer 30 years ago.

Despite the cryptic invitation, there are a number of things that we can expect to see at the event.

It is almost certain that this event will see the introduction of Apple's latest iPhone, the iPhone 6. In fact, it is likely that there will be a number of iPhone models introduced at the event, in different sizes. One of these is expected to be 4.7-inches and the other is expected to be more of a phablet-sized 5.5-inches. For comparison, Apple's current iPhone has a 4-inch display.

Not only will the iPhone 6 lineup include larger displays, but Apple is also expected to include sapphire-based displays, which are much stronger than the Gorilla Glass that Apple has been using to date.

Analysts have suggested that the launch of the iPhone 6 will be one of Apple's largest product launches ever. In fact, the company has reportedly asked manufacturers to make around 40 percent more iPhones by the end of the year than it did last year for the iPhone 5S and 5C.

The iPhone is not the only product that Apple is set to launch at the event. It is also expected that Apple will finally release the long-awaited iWatch, or iTime as it may be called.

Apple already hinted at a new wearable device when it released its latest mobile operating system, iOS 7, which includes fitness-tracking capabilities. A newer version, iOS 8, will be released this fall.

Apart from the fitness-tracking abilities, the iWatch is expected to include voice-control features and deliver notifications, similar to what the Android Wear devices do now.

It is still unclear whether Apple's first wearable device will be an actual watch or more of a fitness-tracking band similar to Samsung's Gear Fit.

The fact that the event is being held at the Flint Center for Performing Arts rather than at the Apple campus is very interesting. Apple's auditorium is quite small, so the fact that it is being held in a larger hall suggests that Apple wants more people to attend, which in turn suggests that the event might be a little higher profile than other events.
