The purported LG G5 Lite is shaping up as an intriguing smartphone, sharing many specifications with the flagship G5.
"Lite" versions of smartphones typically come with notably watered-down specs compared with their full-fledged brothers, aiming to cater to the midrange segment of the smartphone market.
Tech Times reported back in February that the LG G5 Lite would pack a weaker processor compared with the "standard" G5, and newly-surfaced information now seems to back up that claim. However, the rest of the specs could be high-end.
German site WinFuture says the LG G5 Lite will come with the same overall specs as the flagship G5, aside from the processor and RAM. More specifically, the Lite version is expected to pack a Snapdragon 652 chipset under the hood, backed up by 3 GB of RAM.
The LG G5, for its part, comes with 4 GB of RAM and Qualcomm's top-notch Snapdragon 820 processor. After the Snapdragon 810 fiasco surrounding overheating issues, the Snapdragon 820 comes as a more powerful, more advanced chip to make it all better. Of course, the 820 is also more expensive, which leads to higher-priced smartphones. For some markets, that's an issue.
The LG G5 Lite should bridge that gap, offering a more affordable processing option without compromising the rest of the specs. This model will reportedly make its way to Latin American markets and may not even reach other regions worldwide.
A lower-end processor that translates to a lower price overall for the device would allow LG to penetrate more markets with its G5 brand, especially if it boasts impressive specs overall.
With differences only in CPU and RAM, it would mean that the LG G5 Lite would feature the same 5.3-inch display with QHD resolution (2560 by 1440 pixels), 32 GB of expandable storage and the other powerful specs the flagship G5 brings to the table.
It will be interesting to see if the LG G5 Lite retains the modular aspect of the flagship G5, although it seems rather unlikely.
It's all still in the rumor mill state at this point, but it shouldn't take too long until the LG G5 Lite makes its formal debut. We'll keep you up to date as soon as it's official, but take everything with a grain of salt in the meantime.
