As Captain America readies himself to go up against Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War on the big screen in the Marvel cinematic universe, the Marvel comic book universe plans on gearing up for Civil War II.
Civil War II comes from writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist David Marquez and follows a new story in the comic books about a mysterious character who has the power to accurately predict events that happen in the future. Marvel's superheroes must decide how to use the information given by this stranger: Captain Marvel wants to stop criminals before they commit their acts, but Iron Man believes that punishment should only come after a crime gets committed.
This creates a rift between Marvel's superheroes, with each taking a side. Marvel recently announced which characters will side with Captain Marvel and which will side with Iron Man.
"The Marvel Universe is at a crossroads," writes Marvel in a press email. "A new power has emerged, one that can predict the future — for good or ill — and the heroes of the Marvel Universe are faced with a choice: Wield the power of 'predictive justice' to change the future as they see fit, or reject it and allow tomorrow to unfold unaltered. Protect the future. Change the future. Choose your side."
Captain Marvel's team includes Captain America (Steve Rogers), War Machine, Spider-Man, Vision, Medusa, Blue Marvel, The Winter Soldier, Spectrum, She-Hulk, Hawkeye and Ant-Man.
Iron Man's team includes Captain America (Sam Wilson), Thor, Black Panther, Star-Lord, Luke Cage, Hercules, Miss America, Daredevil, Black Widow, The Hulk (Amadeus Cho) and Deadpool.
Marvel plans on launching its Civil War II comics event on Free Comic Book Day on May 7 by offering fans a free flip book teasing the storyline. The story begins with the new character claiming that one of Marvel's superheroes will cause a major disaster in three days: this leads to the discussion, argument and eventual split between the two differently opinionated superhero groups.
The major comic book plot will also have two spin-offs: Civil War II: Spider-Man and Civil War II: X-Men. Meanwhile, Captain America: Civil War releases to theaters on May 6.
