Sony announced at the 2016 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco that its virtual reality headset PlayStation VR will be released sometime in the month of October for $399. And while the price tag is more affordable than other headsets like the $799 HTC Vive or the $599 Oculus Rift, users will still definitely be getting their money's worth because of the functionalities this device supports.
PlayStation VR users will be able to stream Netflix and even play PS4 games with the headset.
After revealing the ballpark release date for the PSVR and its price, Sony Computer Entertainment's CEO Andrew House dropped more details about the device, which includes a mode that provides users with a giant virtual screen.
Called "Cinematic Mode," users will be able to be totally immersed in their streaming experience by watching Netflix on this virtual screen. Users can also zoom using three different levels to get the perfect view of their content.
Gamers who prefer the PlayStation 4 as their console of choice will be pleased to know that they will also be able to play PS4 games in this Cinematic Mode. We are not yet sure what types of titles will be supported for VR or if this would only apply to new titles made for the PSVR, but we did learn that the new Star Wars: Battlefront game will be released exclusively for Sony's virtual reality headset.
House also announced at the Game Developers Conference that Sony has partnered with Electronic Arts and Lucasfilm to develop a VR version of Star Wars: Battlefront for its device. This means that gamers and Star Wars fans will be able to enter the galaxy far, far away like never before.
There is no word yet about when the VR game will be released or what the price is expected to be. More details are expected to be released in the months ahead.
It's important to note that although the PSVR is less expensive than its competition, consumers will have to shell out more money to be able to enjoy the complete experience. This includes getting the PlayStation Eye digital camera, a Move controller and (for those who don't already have one) a PS4 console. All of this would cost less than $900.
Still, we expect it will feel like we're in on the action ourselves while streaming Daredevil on the virtual screen. The VR headset will surely take our gaming to the next level.
