On CBS' Supergirl, the orphaned Kara Zor-El must get lonely, at least sometimes. Sure, she has an adopted sister and a semi-caring boss, along with a group of dedicated friends, but maybe what she really needs is a furry superpowered pet to join her on missions when she's out saving National City and the world.
The show's executive producer Ali Adler recently discussed some of the ideas that the writers have for future episodes of the series, and in doing so, happened to mention giving Kara a pet, one ripped straight out of the pages of the Supergirl comics.
"Comet the Superhorse, Streaky the Supercat — we love them all," Adler said to Comic Book Resources at PaleyFest. "I think that we just hope to continue with this tremendous cast and make episodes for many years to come. We'll exploit every little thing, I promise. We'll get in there and turn it on its head and try to make something. I mean, we've talked about Streaky. So yeah, definitely we'll embrace all the canon."
In the comic books, Supergirl has Streaky the Supercat, a character that debuted in 1960. In that story, Supergirl started experimenting with Kryptonite, trying to figure out how to diffuse its effects on her. However, her experiments failed and, frustrated, she tossed it out the window. Streaky, being a curious cat, found the Kryptonite, and its radiation gave the cat superpowers.
That's right, Streaky not only has superstrength, superspeed, supervision and a higher IQ, but also can fly. And who doesn't love the idea of a superintelligent flying cat?
It wouldn't be too far out there for the Supergirl writers to include Streaky or Comet in the series, mostly because it has already toyed with including stories from DC Comics throughout its first season. Not only did the show introduce Bizarro-Girl, bring in the Fortress of Solitude and even added Martian Manhunter as one of the show's main characters, but one episode mirrored the events in a Superman comic, "The Man Who Has Everything."
Supergirl airs at 8 p.m. EDT Mondays on CBS.
