The popular "Late Late Show With James Corden" segment known as "Carpool Karaoke" will be receiving its own CBS primetime special later this month. The hour-long show will feature a brand new segment featuring Jennifer Lopez along with additional clips from the first year of Corden's late night talk show.
James Corden, the multi talented host originating from the UK has had a relatively successful launch of his nightly gabfest this year, but the breakout hit of the show has been the popular "Carpool Karaoke" segment. The premise is simple-Corden tools around town in a car with a musical guest or guests, talking and singing along to hits from the featured guest's musical catalogues along with additional tracks from other artists, often revealing a more humorous or personal side to some of the world's biggest pop stars.
Among the top pop artists who have already participated are One Direction, Mariah Carey, Justin Beiber, Jennifer Hudson and Carrie Underwood. The segment featuring Adele released late last year actually broke records for a YouTube clip from a late night talk show, garnering over 84 million views. In less than a year, the YouTube channel for the show has received over 800 million total views and boasts 3.9 million subscribers.
Still, the "Late Late Show With James Corden" trails its network competitors "Late Night With Seth Meyers" and "Nightline" in the all-important Nielsen TV viewing ratings. That's partially due to the fact that Corden's lead in "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" has significantly lower ratings than its challengers, "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" and "Jimmy Kimmel Live!". Corden's show, however, retains more viewers from its lead in than either of its rivals and has been gaining a steady following.
CBS appears to believe in the show to the extent that it has decided to support it with a high profile primetime special to air at the end of this month. The special will feature a brand new "Carpool Karaoke" segment featuring none other than superstar Jennifer Lopez, along with additional clips from the popular segment and other highlights from the first season of the "Late Late Show With James Corden." The special is set to debut on CBS on March 29 at 10 PM.
