AMD announces R9 285, graphics card boasts of 3.29 teraFLOPS computing performance

At the company's "30 years of graphics" celebration, AMD announced that the Radeon R9 285, which is the successor to the Radeon R9 280, will hit the stores on Sept. 2.

The R9 285, which will use the Tonga Pro GPU system, is said by AMD to outperform the Nvidia GTX 760. The mid-range graphics card will have gamers running even the most recent games for the PC at the maximum possible detail.

The upcoming R9 285 provides users with computing performance of 3.29 teraFLOPS, with clock speeds reaching as high as 918 MHz.

The stock version of the graphics card uses 2GB of GDDR5 memory over a 256-bit interface. However, there will be some versions of the graphics card made by third party manufacturers that will feature 4GB worth of memory.

An improvement that the R9 285 boasts over the R9 280 is the better power draw, with the R9 285 featuring a 190-watt power draw compared to the 250-watt power draw that is seen in most of the rest of the cards found in the R9 line.

However, the R9 285 also has similarities with some aspects with the rest of the R9 cards that has made the line a popular choice for gamers. Some of these similarities include a full-length display port, two outputs for DVI and a port for HDMI.

The R9 285 will be sold at $249.

Coinciding with the launch of the R9 285, AMD will also be including new games bundled with the entire R9 card line, with the bundle being called the "Never Settle: Space Edition" promotion.

The games included in the bundle are Alien Isolation and Star Citizen.

Alien Isolation in particular was developed in conjunction with the AMD Gaming Evolved program, and as such, is fully optimized for a top-class gaming experience for the PC. The video game was the result of collaboration between AMD and the game's developer, Creative Assembly.

"The AMD Gaming Evolved program is committed to making games look great and run well for all PC gamers," said director of ISV Gaming and Alliances, AMD, Ritche Corpus. "By working with truly talented developers like Creative Assembly, we deliver on that commitment with fun and beautiful games like 'Alien: Isolation,' which give PC gamers the high-end technology they deserve."

Alien Isolation is a video game reboot of the Alien franchise, a survival horror game that follows Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Ellen Ripley who is the character of Sigourney Weaver in the original Alien film.
