The developer edition for the Microsoft HoloLens is now up for preorders, with the holographic computer headset priced at $3,000.
The Windows 10-powered device is powered by a custom Microsoft Holographic Processing Unit with an Intel 32-bit processor and 2 GB of RAM. The HoloLens also comes with 64 GB worth of storage, a 2-megapixel camera and Bluetooth support.
The first devices will be shipping out on March 30, and for developers that would be looking to get their hands on what could possibly be a breakthrough device, there are some prerequisites in purchasing the HoloLens.
On the official Microsoft page for the developer edition of the HoloLens, it is stated that preordering developers will have to be located in the United States or Canada, which is where the Development Edition of the device will be available first.
Developers will also have to sign up as Windows Insiders, which would require them to provide feedback to Microsoft regarding the HoloLens and to work with the company in the development of holographic computing.
The page also noted that the hardware and apps for the HoloLens Development Edition will only be in English, which means that knowledge in the language is required.
Passing these requirements is not the only thing that developers need to do before preordering the HoloLens though. As Microsoft is looking to build a community around the device, the company stated that it is looking for different kinds of developers to be able to create diverse experiences. As such, developers are recommended to share as much information as they can about themselves in their application form for a HoloLens Development Edition preorder so that Microsoft can judge which developers are the best fit for the HoloLens community.
Only those that Microsoft invite through the process will be able to preorder the developer edition of HoloLens. For those that do not receive the invite, Microsoft said that it will be sending out more invitations as soon as additional HoloLens devices are available to be shipped out.
It should be noted that developers can also purchase up to two HoloLens devices upon receiving their initial invitations. For volume orders of over 50 devices and enterprise arrangements, developers are requested to contact a Microsoft account representative.
A Windows blog post said that developers who purchase the HoloLens will immediately gain access to hundreds of Windows Store apps, along with access to holographic app experiences to jump start the development process.
