Microsoft seems to be working towards offering Windows 10 Mobile ROMs to smartphones such as the Xiaomi Mi 5 and the OnePlus 3.
Last year, the company rolled out its ROM targeted at Xiaomi Mi 4, and all owners of Mi 4 devices (Chinese variant) could give it a go.
Insiders hint that in 2016 Microsoft will pick up the pace in delivering its ROM to more Android handsets.
Owners of OnePlus 2 smartphones will be among the first to receive the Windows 10 Mobile ROM. A notable mention is that Microsoft aims to launch its ROM to handsets that are not even on the market yet, such as the OnePlus 3 and the Xiaomi Mi 5. The latter made its debut at the MWC, but is yet to go on sale.
There are precedents for this.
As Xiaomi released its Mi Pad 2 tablet, the slate came carrying two OSs: the Windows 10 OS and the Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Therefore, a rumor that surfaced out of China (thanks to ITHome) about the Xiaomi Mi 5 say that it will come with two OS versions, the first being Android 6.0 and the second Windows 10 Mobile OS.
According to other information, the Mi 5 will lack an embedded Windows 10 Mobile version, but thanks to a Microsoft ROM, the mobile version of Windows 10 will be able to run on the device.
ITHome notes that Microsoft signed a partnership with OnePlus and Xiaomi so that its mobile operating system could power up a larger number of smartphones.
Microsoft is working hard to improve the performance of its Windows 10 Mobile OS on proprietary hardware. Tech fans expected to see Windows 10 Mobile OS go live in December 2015 for more devices, but we are already in February 2016 and no official launch date for the mobile operating system was released. Rumors that surfaced recently claim that Windows 10 Mobile OS should come out on Feb. 29.
So far, users who got into the Windows Insider program received a preview build of the Windows 10 Mobile. Dubbed 14217, the build works as a beta testing ground for the mobile OS. A newer build named 14267 recently improved the former OS version in a couple of areas, such as functionality and safety.
The only smartphones that come with Windows 10 Mobile out of the box are the Lumia 950, the Lumia 950 XL, the Lumia 650 and the Lumia 550, but the new OS has yet to reach other devices.
