Amazon is the go-to site to buy just about everything, whether it is beauty products, smartphone accessories or even gaming consoles. The fact is, pretty much anything you're looking to purchase is available, and it doesn't hurt that Prime members automatically get free two-day shipping.
With such an extensive catalog of products, you might be curious to know just how much it would cost to buy one of every single item offered on the site?
Zurich-based computer scientist Kynan Eng decided to calculate this cost after it was brought up on the question website Quora. To figure out how big the bill would be for an Amazon shopaholic who needs to have everything, Eng multiplied the number of items available on Amazon's main website by the average price of an item. He found that there are 470 million items available on the site, which averages to $26.86 per item. (Eng makes sure to go into great detail about how he arrived at this number.)
Get ready, Amazon addicts, because this is about to be a pretty hefty bill.
According to the calculation, it would cost about $12.86 billion to buy every item from the online retailer.
And who said math isn't fun?
One important thing to add is that Eng did not include shipping in the cost, but we can just assume we would be guaranteed free shipping for spending a few billion in just one sitting.
While it's safe to say that none of us will be handing over $12.86 billion to Amazon in this shopping spree, this is such a high number that not even some of billionaires would be able to afford it, including Oprah Winfrey, who has a net worth of $3.1 billion.
Still, it's fun (or sickening) to think that Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has enough money — $48.8 billion (net worth) to be exact — to literally buy every single item his company sells.
This wasn't the only money question Eng was able to answer. After first going to Quora to answer questions about neuroscience, he soon found himself falling down the rabbit hole and being drawn to answer some rather random questions. He was also able to find more than $900 billion was spent saving Matt Damon in his movies, with it costing $200 billion alone just to rescue the actor in his latest film The Martian.
