'Pokemon Sun' And 'Pokemon Moon' Trademarks Look To Have Spoiled Nintendo's Surprise

Fans have long speculated new Pokemon games to be on the horizon. After all, what better way to celebrate 20 years of pocket monsters than by releasing, or at least revealing, two brand new entries in the long-running franchise?

It looks like fans won't have to wait long to see what's next. Two trademarks for Pokemon Moon and Pokemon Sun were recently filed in Europe and discovered to have been filed by Nintendo and the Pokemon Company, complete with logos.

Considering there is a Pokemon-specific Nintendo Direct stream happening on Feb. 26, it seems almost certain that Nintendo will officially unveil the next two entries of the franchise then. The Nintendo Direct won't be lasting too long, so fans probably shouldn't expect more than an announcement and a brief look at the game, especially since Nintendo will want to focus at least some of the attention on the upcoming Pokken Tournament for Wii U.

No other details about Pokemon Sun and Moon are known at this time, but fans can expect a new region to explore, new Pokemon to capture and a new team of villains for the player to overcome. As for when they might release, it could be later this year or next year. We'll share more details as they become available. The last entry in the series, Pokemon Omega Ruby and Pokemon Alpha Sapphire, released in November of 2014 and are actually remakes of two older Pokemon games. That means it will have been more than three years since the release of the last brand new entries in the franchise, Pokemon X and Y, which released in October of 2013.

There is certainly a lot to get excited about if you are a Pokemon fan. Nintendo recently released a free iOS app called Pokemon Photo Booth, which allows users to add Pokemon-related filters and frames to pictures. If you've been with the franchise since the beginning and need a reminder on just how far the franchise has come since the early days, be sure to check out this early American advertisement for Pokemon Red and Blue.
