David Bowie's passing two months ago still feels like a huge blow to the music and art world. But even in his final months, Bowie continued to create songs for his last album, an off-Broadway musical play based on his songs, to name a few.
Now, it has been revealed that he also gave access to his music on “Blackstar” so it becomes an Instaminiseries.
The company creates video shorts exclusively for Instagram and Bowie allowed them exclusive, access to his music on “Blackstar” even before the album went public. Even more, he gave creative freedom to the production on what to do with the songs – no limits, input, or preconditions at all.
The result is a 16-episode mini-series, “UNBOUND: A ★ InstaMiniSeries,” which completed filming in December 2016. The series will be posted on Instagram beginning Thursday at 8 p.m. EST. Episodes will be posted for three weeks every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
The series is the team's visual interpretation of Bowie's final album; thus, carries the same evocative, dark, and mysterious mood suggested in his lyrics, music, and artwork. The team described that they wanted the series to be universal for a global audience to enjoy.
“UNBOUND” says they are especially honored that Bowie entrusted them with his work to give them the artistic freedom to explore his music in this mini-series, said Nikki Borges, Instaminiseries founder and executive producer.
"David Bowie has always been about reinvention over repetition. Remarkably honest and passionate in his work, his innovations have influenced our own work as we transform a social media platform into a creative outlet. We are grateful to have the opportunity to participate with the chameleonic rock icon and honored to be entrusted with interpreting his art," she said.
Starring in “UNBOUND” will be Tavi Gevinson, an actress and singer who shot to fame when she created the fashion blog Style Rookie when she was 15 years old.
