Bethesda took a leap of faith in mobile game development with Fallout Shelter, which was announced during its E3 in June 2015 and released later the same day. To say that the game developer was surprised with the success of its first-ever mobile game is an understatement, but now that it has seen that it has potential in the mobile games market, its creative director Todd Howard reveals the company plans to make more.
This is on top of the three new games that Bethesda is working on. Howard announced Bethesda's plan in an interview at the Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain (DICE) Summit and stressed that it is still focused on the gaming experience rather than the income it can generate from the mobile games.
This is good news to those who enjoyed Fallout Shelter, especially its lack of required in-game purchases to advance in the game. It is even more welcome news to those who appreciate old-school gameplay more than purchased upgrades.
Howard revealed that Bethesda's drive to make more mobile games comes primarily from the developers in the studio playing games on their devices.
"It's in your pocket, a lot of [the games are] free or easy to try... So every time you're playing, you're thinking, 'We could do one of these, I think we could do something special here.' So we're gonna do more," he said.
Howard did not specify if the planned mobile games will be spin-offs of Bethesda games or original concepts, when the games can be expected and if these will be similar to Fallout Shelter where players oversee the "happiness" of people living inside the vault.
What we know for sure is that Bethesda is currently invested in its long-term projects and that it will, at some point, come up with more mobile games.
