System Shock 3 is reportedly in the works, and developer OtherSide Entertainment recruited Warren Spector to make sure that the new title is as good as the original.
Spector was the main creator behind the first System Shock game. The unanimous praise the title received in its 22 years of existence convinced OtherSide Entertainment to go headhunting for as many of the original team members as possible.
Two months ago, a countdown website notified gamers that a third installment of System Shock is in tow.
Spector brings to the table more than his expertise with the original game. He also worked on popular titles such as Ultima and Deus Ex. The veteran is also working with OtherSide Entertainment on Underworld Ascendant, and that project has to be completed before he can focus all his attention to System Shock 3.
Meanwhile, Spector keeps himself busy by being a teacher at the University of Texas.
He explains that the opportunity to revive System Shock's universe with the technical means of the 21st century was an offer too tempting to refuse.
"Working on System Shock was one of the most fulfilling things I've done in my career and it's hard to describe how much I'm looking forward to sharing with players what Shodan has been up to since the last game was released." Spector says.
Just as a quick reminder, Shodan is the main antagonist featured in the two previous installments of System Shock. Some consider Shodan, the female artificial intelligence, as one of the most memorable villains of all time. If it sounds like GLaDOS from the Portal games took its inspiration from Shodan, you are probably right.
In spite of having very little information about System Shock 3, rumors that surfaced so far hint that the gaming company wants to have a virtual reality component in the new title. The older System Shock games let players explore cyberspace itself, so it would be fitting to implement VR as today's go-to immersion technique.
Some might wonder if such a young company as OtherSide Entertainment can handle the daunting task of rebooting a classic title. However, with legend Warren Spector on board and more recruitments coming in the near future, we have every reason to be optimistic.
