Toy Fair 2016: 'Batman: The Animated Series' Batwing Replica Is A Mammoth Recreation Of A Cartoon Classic

It's been more than 20 years since Batman: The Animated Series hit the air, but the show's legacy isn't being swept aside anytime soon. In addition to new lines of action figures based on the seminal cartoon hit, DC Entertainment also unveiled an impressive 36-inch Batwing replica at this year's Toy Fair.

While there was only a prototype available on the show floor in New York City, what DC is working toward is impressive nonetheless. The sleek, art deco design that producer Bruce Timm instilled in the series is on full display, with clean lines and a minimalist design that touts the simplicity of the craft.

Jim Fletcher, from DC Entertainment's Creative Services, also revealed that the plane has functioning landing gear, so collectors can display it on a flat surface. And though it wasn't present at the show, he said they are working on wall mounts so fans can hang the plane around their homes.

The final version of the plane will work in conjunction with DC's line of Animated Series figures, with the ability to put Batman and Robin (or the Joker, if you're feeling adventurous) in the cockpit and passenger seat. The cockpit will also have lights and other features to bring an even deeper level of authenticity to the replica. Cost is expected to be between $150-$175.

The Animated Series news at Toy Fair didn't stop with the Batwing, though. The company also announced new additions to its action figure line, including a "Girl's Night Out" pack, which includes Poison Ivy, Livewire, Harley Quinn, Supergirl and Batgirl. There will also be a "Tales of the Dark Knight" pack, which features Carrie Kelly, Batman and the Mutant Leader from Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, all done in the Animated Series style.

Debuting in 1992, Batman: The Animated Series went on to win four Emmy Awards, including one for Outstanding Animated Program. The show was acclaimed by both critics and fans not only for its unique art design, but also for its surprisingly deep storytelling, music and mood.
