Dwayne Johnson confirms 'Shazam' role, but who will he play?

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has had a tough go of it lately at the box office. This summer's "Hercules" did not exactly break any box office records, leaving Johnson without a big hit since the "G.I. JOE" sequel. Still, Johnson is the consummate showman, always giving the fans what they want and teasing what could be his next project.

For some time now, speculation has run rampant that Johnson would be playing a big time DC Universe character, but nothing has been officially announced. It seems that Johnson would be playing either Shazam or Black Adam, one a hero and the other a villain. While fans admit that Johnson is the perfect fit for either role because he's got the look down so perfectly, the actor seems to continue to drag his feet in making an official announcement.

Johnson has gone out of his way to tease fans into making their own educated guesses on just who the actor/wrestler is going to be playing. Recently he Tweeted images of Superman, Shazam and Black Adam, leaving fans to wonder which role he will be playing in a future Warner Bros. property. Still, he would not specify just which project was in the works. Although it is safe to say that Superman is most definitely out of the mix.

According to the Spanish-language site La Nacion (via CinemaBlend), Johnson spoke to the news organization about just what would be happening with the property he has been linked to.

"It's the interpretation of a character from DC Comics. It's the story of Shazam, but I can't say if I'm playing Shazam or Black Adam...In this case in particular, I believe we will do [the part] justice. I'm putting my heart and soul into this role," Johnson said.

It seems like it is just another cagey statement from Johnson, who may be hamstrung by a studio that does not want to reveal any pertinent details while its massive "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice" film is in production.

The rumor has it that a Shazam movie is tentatively scheduled for 2016, but that certainly does not jibe well with the aforementioned "Batman v. Superman" movies release. Johnson keeps ping ponging back and forth between Shazam and Black Adam, spinning fans' imaginations into a frenzy wishing that Warner Bros. would just make the official announcement already. One thing is for sure, Johnson could use a superhero sized hit right about now so the sooner the announcement, the better.
